Do your locks meet the BS-3621 standard?

Added by: SMR Locksmiths Ltd, on: 28th June 2021

Are you satisfied with your good, old Euro cylinder? You need to know that not all kinds of locks give you full protection from intrusion into your home, office or Airbnb property. Some locks look good from the outside, but are they burglar resistant and approved by the Police or insurance companies? Do you know how to check if locks comply with British Standards?

Locks which have been tested and certified to be highly resistant against being snapped, picked, drilled or forced are given a Police-approved BS3621 standard.

British Standard is a specification of recommended procedure related to delivering a service or supplying products. High security locks also bear a British Standard Kitemark (BSI). If you want to find out how to check if a lock meets the BS3621 standard, where to look for a Kitemark or what kind of locks are best on the market, read the following!

Does your lock do the job?

High security locks recommended by Master Locksmith Association and by best locksmiths in London, have anti-bump, anti-drill and anti-snap properties which makes them hard to be forced by a thief.

These features are easy to recognise by experienced locksmiths, but for an amateur they are not so obvious. Whether you moved in into a new property and need new locks installed, you have old locks and are not sure if the comply to the newest standards, you wish to fulfil basic insurers’ requirements or you are simply concerned about your house or office security, it is worth getting familiar with how to tell that locks are BS 3621 certified.

BS3621 locks basics.

BS 3621 lock standard was first introduced in the 1960’s and has been with us since then. Most frequently, you can find BS 3621 locks on wooden or timber doors in domestic properties. In commercial properties, such locks tend to appear on metal doors as well. Such locks cannot be opened on either if the sides without the key.

The history has seen several versions of British Standards, but the latest standard version is BS 3621:2017 and this is what you should look for on your lock.

Where to look for BS marking.

There are two basic ways recommended by professional locksmiths which allow you to check if your locks are compliant with BS3621 standard. First of all, look for a British Standard Number on your lock. It should be clearly engraved on the lock in a fairly visible place. Such as the plate. Additionally, look for a Kitemark on the faceplate of the lock.  This is the part which shows when you open the door.

Usually, you can expect to find several types of door locks compliant with BS-3621 in your property.

These are some of the following:

  • Mortice Sash Lock & Mortice Dead Lock
  • Euro Deadlock & Sashlock
  • Rim Cylinder locks such as Night Latches & Rim Locks

If you are still not sure if your front, back and window door locks meet the British Standard, do not wait for an accident to happen. Burglary can be a very traumatic experience, especially when you do not have appropriate kind of locks installed as your insurer may fail to out the money that you would normally expect to be paid in such situation.

Therefore, check your locks for British Standard today.

If they do not meet the standard, do not worry. Affordable locksmith services are closer than you think. Try calling us right now! Or try googling “locksmith near me”, “locksmith in my area” or “local locksmith services”, check online reviews of the ones you find and contact the locksmith as soon as possible. If time is of the essence for you, search your closest local area, for example by postcode (such as in “SW16 locksmith”).

If it turns out that your locks do meet the British standard, you need to get them replaced as soon as possible. Make sure to invest in trusted brands such as ERA, Ingersoll Rand, Chubb Locks, Union, Yale or MUL-T-LOCK, and always choose local, professional locksmith services.
