Are your doors thief-resistant?

Added by: SMR Locksmiths Ltd, on: 27th October 2021

It is estimated that there is a burglary in the UK every 40 seconds. Burglars tend to be very crafty as it comes to breaking in.

Sometimes, however, the burglars don’t even have to be that crafty. Why? Because of our own bad habits such as leaving the door unlocked. But locking your door, sadly, does not necessarily protect you from the possibility of being robbed.

Know your enemy

Thief-resistant locks and doors are a great advantage as it comes to protecting yourself from burglary. If you want to make your doors truly burglar-proof, get familiar with most common ways the thieves attack your doors!

Force attacks: simple yet effective

First of all, the thief might try straightforward force attacks. These are relatively loud to perform but quick at the same time. Burglar-proof doors and locks are designed to resist such intrusion. Keep in mind that the thief cannot use this method if there are no weak points in the structure of the door.

Drill attack is quite simple as well.

What’s worse, the tool for this operation can be bought at any hardware store! This kind of attack is frequently aimed at the lock cylinder core. This is why it is worth having your doors fortified and using good quality locks.

Lock Picking, lock bumping, lock snapping

If the surroundings of your property call for a more gentle method, the thief is going to try pick, bump or snap your lock. It takes longer, but is effective and relatively mess-free.

Lock picking is about manipulating the pins in your lock cylinder in order to open the lock without the key. This is why it is worth investing in a multipoint locking system which is going to make it harder for the thief. To get a good multipoint lock, speak to your local locksmith.

Lock bumping, in turn, is mostly used for pin tumbler locks. It involves manipulating a lock with a properly modified key and often turns out to be effective for locks which have mechanisms preventing traditional lock-picking. A professional locksmith might be able to advice you on bump-proof locks which will make your door much more secure.

Finally, lock snapping is a method used by thieves in order to expose the core locking mechanism. Lock snapping happens relatively often in the UK, and euro cylinder locks are most affected by it. Majority of euro cylinder locks have a construction flaw which makes them vulnerable as it comes to snapping. If you want euro cylinders in your door, ask your trusted locksmith about good quality ones.

How make your doors more burglar-proof

Both you door and the door frame should have a sturdy core and be weather-resistant. You should apply this rule to all your exterior doors. Also, remember that your garage door also needs to be thief-resistant.

If you have a glass panel in your front or back door, think about reinforcing it with an additional film made of sturdy glass.

Interestingly, sometimes door steps make it harder for the burglar to take your door out of the hinges. And speaking of hinges – do replace them if they are weak. Keep in mind that doors with hinges which face inward tend to be easier for the thieves to kick in.
